Dental amalgam fillings

This article explains dental amalgam fillings, their benefits, procedure and how they compare to other fillings.

Did you know that over 80% of Americans will have at least one cavity by the time they’re 34¹? Cavities are common, but the good news is they can be treated.

Amalgam fillings were a common tooth filling in the past, known for their strength and durability. However, very few dentists keep amalgam materials in their armamentarium, or even offer amalgams anymore.  Typically, if a patient requests amalgam (which is very rare) the dentist will have to order the supplies specifically for that one patient.

What are amalgam tooth fillings?

Amalgam tooth fillings used to be a standard and reliable way to treat cavities caused by tooth decay. This filling material is made from a blend of liquid mercury and powdered metals like copper, silver and tin. It’s easy to shape to fit your tooth, hardens quickly and provides a strong seal to protect and restore your tooth’s structure.

Often referred to as “silver fillings” because of their metallic look, amalgam fillings were a trusted choice in dentistry for over 150 years.² While questions about mercury content have been raised, the FDA confirms that amalgam fillings are safe and effective for repairing decayed teeth.³

Benefits of amalgam fillings

Here’s why amalgam fillings were a reliable option:

Long-lasting

Amalgam fillings are tough. With good dental care, the lifespan of amalgam fillings can last up to 15 years. The metal content makes them highly durable, which is why they’re ideal for molars and other back teeth that handle all the heavy chewing and biting.

A trust option for high cavity risk

If you tend to get cavities regularly—whether due to diet, genetics or lifestyle choices—amalgam fillings can offer reliable protection. These fillings are an effective way to seal cavities tightly, keeping your teeth healthy.

The amalgam filling procedure

We understand that comfort and care matter most. Here’s how we ensure your procedure is easy every step of the way:

  1. Keeping you at ease: First, we’ll apply a local anesthetic to ensure you stay comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.

  2. Cleaning the decay: We gently remove any decayed portions of your tooth, leaving a clean, healthy area for the filling.

  3. Preparation for the filling: The cavity is expertly shaped to hold the filling securely and ensure a proper fit.

  4. Placing the filling: A soft amalgam material is applied, molded to your tooth’s unique shape, and adjusted to match your bite perfectly.

  5. Hardening the filling: Although amalgam sets on its own in minutes, our team will take time to confirm a precise fit.

  6. Polishing for the perfect finish: The filling is polished to make it feel smooth and natural against your tooth.

Within 24 hours, the filling reaches its full strength, but we recommend avoiding chewing on it for the first day to allow it to settle completely. Rest assured, our job isn’t done until your filling feels like it’s always been part of your smile.

How amalgam fillings compare to other types of tooth fillings

Here’s a quick breakdown of how amalgam compares with other popular filling types, so you can make the best choice for your smile:

  • Amalgam vs. Composite Fillings: Composite fillings are made with a mix of resin and glass, designed to match your teeth for a natural look. They’re great for visible areas, but aren’t as durable as amalgam for the back teeth where chewing pressure is greater.

  • Amalgam vs. Glass Ionomer Fillings: Glass ionomer fillings blend in naturally and release fluoride to help combat decay, making them ideal for kids or those prone to cavities. However, they’re not as strong as amalgam or composite options.

At Aspen Dental, we’ll help you weigh your options. Whether you prefer a natural look with composite fillings or need the durability of amalgam for long-term protection, we’ve got your back. Together, we’ll find the solution that keeps your smile strong, healthy and confident.

Amalgam filling FAQs

What is the typical lifespan of an amalgam filling?

Amalgam fillings can last up to 15 years with good care, and sometimes even longer. Thanks to their durable metal content, they’re perfect for back teeth where chewing pressure is stronger (and the silver color stays out of sight).

Are amalgam fillings safe?

Absolutely. At Aspen Dental, we want you to feel confident about your dental care. While amalgam fillings do contain mercury, it’s safely bound within the metal alloy. The FDA has found no solid evidence linking amalgam fillings to harmful health effects in the general population.

Can I get an MRI with amalgam fillings?

Yes, you can. The metals in amalgam fillings—silver, tin, copper and mercury—aren’t ferromagnetic, so they won’t interfere with the MRI’s magnetic fields. The only thing you might notice is some minor image distortion if you’re having an MRI of your mouth, but it poses no health or safety risks.
